Director of AI Engineering
Chris Barngrover is a Director of AI Engineering at Shield AI. He is the Technical Lead of the Hivemind AI research group, previously leading the Scene Understanding, Scalable Learning, and AI Foundations teams. Prior to joining Shield AI, Chris was part of the unmanned systems group at Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC), where he worked on numerous projects across the domains of unmanned systems (land, air, sea, underwater). Chris holds a dual Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Mathematics from Purdue University. He earned his MS and PhD from UCSD in Computer Science Engineering, with a focus on machine learning and computer vision for robotics. Chris has extensive experience in developing AI systems for national security from autonomous base defense ground vehicles to GPS-denied autonomous boats to leading a project to develop automatic recognition of sea floor mines using an unmanned underwater vehicle.
How Does Deep Learning Relate to AI?
How does deep learning relate to AI and machine learning? Artificial intelligence, or machine intelligence as we often think of it, is when a robot or machine runs algorithms that allow it to make discrete and sometimes complex decisions providing the appearance of intelligence. Much of the AI that exists on platforms like the ones we develop at Shield AI use carefully designed and provable algorithms that control the choices of exploration and path planning.

What is Machine Intelligence? The term Artificial Intelligence (AI) is very prominent in mainstream media, causing the initials to often be used without full comprehension of the meaning. AI’s ability to capture the imagination is hardly new. There are movies reflecting on AI as far back as 1927 with Metropolis and continuing to present day; including, of course, the 2001 aptly named film, A.I. Artificial Intelligence.
